Journal Land Pick of the Week

Independent thoughts of PaulECoyote - paulecoyote tosses his $0.02 in the bucket of advice for getting a career in the games industry, similar to what mittens wrote about a few weeks ago (also following yet another industry career blog post). He's been in the industry for just over two years and working at Lionhead, and brings with him the experience of transitioning from another software industry (business/government) to games. He also talks about churn in the industry and how to prep your college career. It's also nice knowing someone in a studio that's currently hiring.

From the Staff

* Gaiiden's Scroll - Pretty minor update this week, with more calls for feedback on Seyi's V5 mock ups, IGF interview update and new events/resources

Project Updates

* Adventures in Text-mode - Twisol shares some new and improved keyboard console input code for his Snipes clone, Cripes

* Journal of zedz - zedz has been spending the last week working on a shoot-em up and you can check out the fruits of his labor. Check his full journal for plenty of posts regarding the development of the game over just the last 6 days.

* Oddgames development journal - O-san has some more screenshots of his isometric game (not editor) showing off some point lighting

* My personal space of thoughts... - Metron is celebrating his 10 years with GDNet by starting to organize a community game project with other members, check his post for details

* Under a ShadowyTree - Black Knight has released Dark Age v0.4.358 for download

* Journal of MrCpaw - MrCpaw practices his drawing skills some more with some painting rather than pixel art

* dwn - DWN has also been practicing some drawing and uploads some scans from his sketchbook

* epic.fail - evolutional has completed project 2 of 9 in his quest to learn the ins and outs of networking code, focusing primarily on UDP

* Happenings with VBStrider and Crew - the newsletter this week is pretty minor, with Loradon progress reaching 65% and an update from the programmer on progress to the game's sound core.

* Metaphorical Journeys of Happenstance - Ravuya updates on some school projects, including his racing game, and offers up some great advice for winter driving

* Journal of Genesis : Origins - vetroXL shares a video of his self-built physics engine in action (after dropping Tokomak) as well as a screenshot. You can hit earlier posts for more screens of similar (but still pretty) nature

* Milkshake's Dev Diary - as promised, Milkshake posts about his depth of field teaser image he threw up last week, discussing how his game evolved from a monolithic single-pass fixed-function render loop, to a modular, multi-language-programmable-shader based architecture

* Inane Ravings of a Mad Engineer - Extrarius has been designing a level for Fantastic Contraption and is looking for people to help find alternative solutions

* Radioactive-Software - dgreen02 shares numerous details about his until-now secret project. It's called Warbots Online and is basically 64 player per server online combat. Gameplay modes - teams, deathmatch, command point control, ticket based play, etc. More info in the post as well as a ton of hi-res shots, as usual.

* On the path with a ramblin' man - jollyjeffers gives a leg-up to anyone looking to setup a D3D11 project, sharing some framework code that will have you up and running with a simple application in no time.

* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z has another entry on graphical scripting with his engine, adding similar capabilities to his node class

* Digital Playground - OrangyTang has updated the look of his external blog and created a new java applet game you can try out

Game Dev Stuffs

* Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar gives a brief and informal review of the book Game Design Workshop, Second Edition: A Playcentric Approach to Creating Innovative Games

* Gauntlets of Recursion (+3) - HopeDagger recounts a talk he attended given by Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU project and free software supporter for over 20 years

* Phyletic gradualism - sprite_hound has discovered the benefits of precompiled headers, cutting his build time from 15 minutes to 3. Finding the MSDN docs pretty useless for setting up precompiled headers, he points to a GDNet thread with more information.

* On the path with a ramblin' man - jollyjeffers shares a final version of the 2009 Windows Graphics diagram he's been working onthe past few months. It charts out all the various windows graphical APIs and components and how they are all related to each other. It's great for wrapping your head around all the various architectures

Other Stuffs

* Gaiiden's Scroll - I linked to Trapper Zoid's backup strategy last week, and this past week I implemented a new backup strategy for myself as well, with details posted. Don't put off making backups, because data lost is gone forever. Just think about it for a second. Forever.

* mittentacular - mittens shares his thoughts on design for the game Mirror's Edge, what makes the game work and what doesn't.

* Any Colour You Like - benryves goes into the history of BBC Basic and how you can extend the language, adding additional statements to perform functions.
