Object Creation Tutorials Series
by Lara Engebretson · 02/26/2009 (5:17 pm) · 12 comments
After completing this series you will be able to create a new low polygon 3d model, create and apply textures, export the model, create and assign shaders and import the object into TGEA 1.8.
The following videos were created using Milkshape3D 1.8.4, GIMP 2.6.2, TGEA 1.8, and will be updated for the new Torque 3D tools. A general knowledge of 3D modeling and image editing is helpful in completing these tutorials.
To follow along with this series, download these files before beginning: light1.jpg, UVGrid.jpg and lantern.xcf
Part One: Creating an Object
Part Two: UV Mapping
Part Three: Texture Creation
Part Four: Shader Creation
Part Five: Importing a Model
Enjoy!

The subject was out of my realm of knowledge, but I followed each draft and video you submitted. Ready for the next spin up?

Great job. I've watched them all and there is great value to be found in these tutorials. I even learned a few tips that I didn't know before, thank you.

I hope there are a bunch of these for T3D when it comes out. That will instantly remove all pressure on Admiral Perry :)

Great series, I've learned a lot. But in tutorial 4, did you save the normal map as a jpg? Wouldn't the compression mess up the normals? Or does TGEA not require the colors to exactly normalized for a shader effect?

Excellent...except for the MilkShape part. :)

Great work Lara these will be really helpful - one request though could you make one that walks through adding a specular map to the alpha channel as I struggle like mad with that one.

Thanks!

Really awesome! Great additions for those learning about how to make the most of their models. Thanks!

@Tom The plan is to recreate both the Object Creation and the Terrain Editing tutorials series for T3D.
@Morrock I'm going to get that fixed today. The normal map should be exported as a png and not a jpg...the normal map 'works' as a jpg but there is a definite loss of quality. Thanks for catching that!
@Andy (and everyone) Please do send me your requests on tutorials you'd like to see...your input helps me plan for new tutorials.
Thanks!

I still can't get part one past 20 seconds though, it buffers the whole vid but stops at 20 secs on both of my PC's and the wifes laptop. All the others play fine to the end... Has me confuzzled since it's obviously not a problem for anyone else.

Seriously useful stuff, thanks Lara. Hope this is going to be an ongoing thing covering various topics, they're invaluable for jump-starting people into Torque.I still can't get part one past 20 seconds though, it buffers the whole vid but stops at 20 secs on both of my PC's and the wifes laptop. I think that you should do this tutorial again with houdini.

I would buy these tutorials if they were sold on the site in a heart beat.

This is exactly what the community needs. Anyone new to milkshape can pick this up and apply the techniques to their modelling. It was a real eye opener for me, great job guys thanks very much.I would buy these tutorials if they were sold on the site in a heart beat.

Very good job. Looking forward to going through these in more detail when I get home.
