GDNet: Weekend Reading
by Drew -Gaiiden- Sikora · 06/27/2009 (9:27 am) · 0 comments
So it's early Friday evening, the thunder rumbles off in the distance and the rain just starts to fall... and the power goes out. What? Like, can't the storm get here first? But that's okay, because my laptop battery is fully charged and can run for as much as 4-6 hours if I really try, so I can still... oh, wait - the internet modem doesn't have a battery. Well, shucks.
Hence, the Saturday edition of Weekend Reading. Thankfully the power (after finally returning many hours later) did not cut out during the making of this post, or I would have slung obscenities into the air and gone to bed.
Journal Land Pick of the Week
mittentacular - mittens has another design essay up that looks at two similar titles: Infamous and Prototype - they both share protagonists with super powers romping around a large city. Mittens is looking to see "how each title attempts to have its game mechanics and atmosphere inform a player's sense of purpose and how the two games treat their protagonist's powers/abilities."
Stop by and give greets to new Journal Land citizen Arcan3Artist!
Also, welcome back baldurk!
From the Staff
* Gaiiden's Scroll - weekly sitrep covers a V5 update, Intel contest reminder and new resources
* Continuous Refinement - superpig starts describing the new tagging system for V5 of GDNet, an aspect to the new site that greatly affects the way things will be organized. It's also really cool.
Project Updates
* Journal of AEdmonds - AEdmonds has the first game screen up for his Breakout clone, his second game project after Two Player Pong
* Journal of Aardvajk - Aardvajk has a couple of cool journal entries as usual but this week the one the stands out is his first shot at recording the type of music he feels would fit for Squishy. Swing by and let him know what you think if you're into music critiquing
* Ye Olde Ramblings - Telastyn has been working to introduce visibilty to Tangent (private, public, etc), has updated some of the documentation and is considering a new release soon
* Journal of Lethargic Programmers - cameni shows off some screens of roads with the outerra engine, as well as general details into what makes up the roads and their surfaces
* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z is looking for "D3D9 text libraries that allow for simple HTML or RTF formatting" - drop him a line if you know of any
* Journal of MrCpaw - MrCpaw has been working on some paintings and would like some feedback. The second one is here
* Metaphorical Journeys of Happenstance - Ravuya has a new Afterglow video up
* Journal of lucius - lucius talks about the new dynamic lighting feature in his Dark Forces mod/remake DarkXL
* Journal of dbaumgart - dbaumgart shares some artwork from projects Dungeons of Dredmor and Aragon Online, including a self-review of some digital paintings and a progression sequence that shows how one portrait developed over time
Game Dev Stuffs
* Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar shares links for reading up on avoiding getting burned out with work and also about dungeon/level design
* Promit's Ventspace - Promit has been taking a look at the guts of SlimDX and explaining the process and reasoning behind its implementation as a way to organize his thoughts for official documentation for people to better understand and improve the open source library.
* epic.fail - evolutional continues to ponder extensions to GameMonkey Script, having completed his foreach extension. He's currently pondering closures and whether to add object-based events, with some rough details on implementation
* What doth life - Aiursrage makes it known that Rake in Grass have released the TGB source for their game Lava Mortus.
Other Stuffs
* Promit's Ventspace - Promit has a friend who is working on dynamic binaural audio for games, and is close to an actual product. Why is this cool? What is binaural audio? Check out the audio/video demonstrations he provides and you will understand. If you're using earbuds to listen, be sure you put them in the proper ears! Then sit back and be creeped out
* Phyletic gradualism - sprite_hound has experimented a bit with ad blocking in Chrome, making available an edited version of AdSweep he has dubbed AdBrush
