Many of you have been wondering what has been happening with Torque 2D. You already know the following: We kicked off development for Torque 2D mid 2009, and made our first public announcement at Casual Connect. In the first development blog, we talked about real-time networking, the hiring of Melv May, and set the stage for future development series. As expected, Melv May drove development at high speed as we continued to build the Torque 2D team and post progress.

After the last blog in November, it’s been quiet. The blog series halted. I began my new position, which commenced on January 4th. Between November and the present, our entire company relocated, the holidays hit, and communication slowed, and the strategy team worked hard on new horizons.

This does not mean development halted. Quite contrary, the Torque 2D team grew and development pushed on. They have made a lot of progress. I read every e-mail they write and I’m very impressed with the foundations they’ve developed.

When I first met Lou, he described an illustration that described how we as a technology company must begin development with a vision that exceeds the anticipated level of current technology at release ( blue line below ). If development continues too long, you miss the mark. If you don’t aim high enough, you miss the mark. Five months ago we made a decision to reset the aim. By aiming higher, we could ensure that we didn’t miss the mark. That was the right decision. I take full responsibility for not communicating this shift until now –I wanted to have more information before I started sending out messages about a technology shift.

The downside to this decision is that development release timelines have been pushed back. Our trend has always been to hold onto our big announcements until GDC, but we do not want to set anyone up for disappointment. There will not be a Torque 2D beta at GDC. I am currently working with the team on an estimate of the first beta but we haven’t done enough risk assessment for me to give you an estimate. At GDC, we will be announcing the estimated beta release date range. I’ve done a lot of software estimations –for more info on my methods, check out this blog I posted on the topic of estimations. This will give you some insight into the process we are using.

We realize a lot of people are following Torque 2D, whether you are an existing TGB users or newcomers wanting to get into 2D game development. Some have even purchased TGB to get a head start, which is what I will cover in the next section.

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngTGB 1.7.5

It has been stated in the forums and IRC that TGB will not be seeing an official release from the Torque Team. We are reversing that decision. Now that the delay in Torque 2D is official, we are going to be pushing out a free, official, TGB 1.7.5 update. The release date for 1.7.5 will be public information by GDC.

This will be an update of new features and fixes ( mostly fixes ). We expect this release to address critical issues TGB developers are encountering: Windows Vista and 7 compatibility, memory leaks, memory reduction, game breaking bugs, and more. A lot of improvements Melv has come up with over the years will be combined with issues resolved via iPhone development, all rolled into 1.7.5. You may see a few bonus features thrown in, but the main goal is extend the life of TGB for those who are waiting on Torque2D.

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngCore Beliefs

I’ve developed a set of core beliefs over the years. Sometimes I break them, and when I do, I always regret it. These beliefs are what I strive to follow. On my first meeting with the team, I covered these beliefs so that the team could help me hold myself to these beliefs and so that they better understand my decision making process.

“Bad news must be delivered immediately, good news can wait”.

This is one of my core beliefs. I didn’t follow my belief and get the news out sooner. Mea culpa.

We are taking steps to help make it so that you can rely on us more. I will never promise transparency. It’s a promise that I don’t think we could ever truly meet –you would only get an illusion of transparency. What I can offer is a system that makes it so you can better rely and depend on us more for your deliverables. That means reasonable estimates in ranges such as fall, months, or weeks.

So I also believe that you don't tear down a man without buiding him back up. So in the spirit of that belief...enjoy.

I can't believe I'm reading this!

Just joking :) Thanks for the update. I fully understand the reasoning and would much rather wait for something that you are proud to release. TGB is perfectly capable and an update to address compatibility issues is most welcome.

Definitely glad to hear news on T2D. Nice to hear that nothing has halted - looking forward to TGB 1.7.5, as well.

This is great news! TGB is still very powerful, and I'm glad to see it get a boost.

If you need somebody to give it an early spin (hint hint wink wink), just let me know!

Thanks a lot for the information! I really appreciate the plan to release a TGB update making it Vista and Win 7 compatible. I guess a big thanks should go to William for his work on this.

The tech demo video looks awesome, keep up the good work!

Well, if that is not C# in that last little screenshot of the tech video :)

Everyone has at least once in their life had reality take longer than what they hoped for... There's two options, cutting and resetting your scope. I'm glad to hear that in this case you're taking option 2. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm happy to wait for something that's really good. (especially when I've got your other engines to play with :))

You guys are usually good at writing blogs, but this one, is one of the most interesting I've read, specially some parts that have nothing to do with the T2D news :)

Glad to see you at the helm Captain Preisz.

Awesome blog Eric!

Sure looks like C# to me... That's going to make working on T2D a lot like... well work. :) Still, I'd be thrilled to work in Visual Studio rather than Torsion. But come on, you all know you've developed a soft spot for Torque Script... Who doesn't like executing string operations in order to cast as an int???

Looks like I see some sweet lighting and camera rotation?! Nice!

@Novack - Glad you like it. Definitely one of my favorite blogs in a while.

Mich, you lied to me! You said there were bad news! I see nothing but good news ;)

Another release of TGB *and* not rushing a beta of the next generation of 2D engine is all good to me.

I'm also totally stealing Eric's core beliefs as more quotes come along. Keep sharing, Eric :)

@Shaderman - Agreed. To quote Melv in an internal e-mail: "Is it just me or is William Lee Sims just burning up the TGB forums with helpfulness?"

We've noticed Stefan, William. It's this type of effort and positive momentum that makes our world go round -we really, really appreciate it.

I owe William an e-mail.

Thank you for the well written and honest update. Will you be announcing any of T2D's features at GDC and continuing with the development blogs, or is everything on hold for a while?

The video was amazing, thanks for the sneak peek. In addition to my current TGB/website project, I can add learning C# to the to-do list. :)

@Mike - let me speak a bit obtusely since I haven't consulted with the guys first. There will be a Torque2D presence and team representative at our booth. My goal; however, was to keep the guys busy moving forward rather than let GDC interrupt their progress -so don't expect too much.

As for feature announcement, yes, we will have more info to expose, but until the guys finish and share the risk assessment with me, I'm not comfortable putting too much in the public unless it's under the title of R&D.

To parrot the blog a bit, I'd like to share more with everyone, but I want to do so under the intention of giving you information that creates the appropriate expectation.

The phrase "TGB 1.7.5" makes me very happy indeed.

Thanks for changing your mind on that -- I think it'll help you out in the end.

Also, I'll add my vote to the stack of "William Lee Sims is awesome". You say you owe him an email... I think I probably personally owe him a steak dinner.

It makes me really happy to know you guys are releasing a bunch of fixes for TGB. Keep up the good work guys, that's awesome!

@Mich, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I was trying to say that the parts that I liked the most, were not really related to the T2D news.

Edit: there, now it is more properly expressed :)

Oh oh oh oh! Completely my bad Novack. I should have read it differently. Glad you like the blog =)

Let me moderate my own previous comment =/

I don't see any bad news... yet... for some reason I have a bad feeling about what T2D's price might be...
