GDC 2010
There is one day remaining in this year’s GDC. Our feet are sore and our voices are scratchy. The news of InstantAction is creating quite a buzz and it’s been fun showing off the latest in digital distribution at the booth.
It’s been a great show so far. I told everyone that we weren’t shooting for stars at this year's GDC, but we did do a lot to deliver a great booth and many great demos. Some have told me that this year's booth is the best yet which is great to hear. This year, we focused on showing off some of the great work that is possible with Torque. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so I’ll let you judge for yourselves below.

GDC Announcement
Recently, I announced that we are resetting our sights for what we are likely calling Torque 2D 2011. I am very happy with the positive remarks and support from the community. We are very excited about some the direction changes and from the discussions I’ve overheard on the expo floor are positive as well. You saw our hint of C#, I look forward to sharing more about how we are planning on using such an efficient language to improve your ability to turn ideas into games.
Given our current plans, we expect the new version of Torque 2D to be available in Q1, 2011. We realize this is quite far away and, given the nature of software estimating, we will follow-up on this estimate in another few months -we expect to confirm this target. The foundations we’ve built and the research that we’ve done suggests that we are building something better ( and different ) than anything available today.
"Sweet @$! Poker uses the Torque2D game engine, which is supported by the Portalarium Player, providing more powerful graphics and better performance than 2D Flash-based browser games."From their website.
We will also be delivering a free update to Torque 2D 2009 ( a.k.a TGB ) by the end of April to help make the wait go faster. We’ve seen a lot of great games on TGB here at GDC. We recently learned that Richard Garriott’s ( Ultima, Tabula Rasa, and space travel fame ) new team used Torque 2D 2009 to make their new Facebook poker game Sweet Poker and we are very excited to work more closely with them.

More Reasons To Get Excited
Firstly, we are offering, for a limited time, a discount on Torque 3D. The coupon code is GDC2010 and it will be available for a short time, so get in while you can. I’ll let you enter to coupon code and find out what the discount is.Lastly, the demos at our booth are blowing people away. I’m posting a couple screen shots to show you what is on display at our booth. I think you will enjoy them. I’m saving screenshots from our premier demo, China Town…that demo is going to get its own blog.

Nice screenshots indeed. Thanks for the information about the estimated T2D and TGB release dates. I'm looking forward to get more information about the C# plans, too.

Not very many announcements this year. The demo real looks great though. What FPS is that?

Just checked the discount. Most generous and stacks with TGEA owners discount. I think I will pick T3D to play a little with it (wife pending approval process).

It seems the links are broken. Anyone else have that problem?

Is TorqueX dead?

Honestly, if it isn't making GG any money, I hope so. I always thought that GG had expanded with too many engines. Remember at one time they were supporting all of the following:
TGE
TGEA
TorqueX (3D/2D)
TGB
The lineup of:
T2D
T3D
looks much more manageable. They just spread themselves too thing, anyone with common sense could have seen that. I guess this is why management has seen a major overhaul.

@Clint - As we speak, Eric is on the road back to Vegas, so I'm posting for him. Torque X is not dead. He told me to say that there will be new Torque X details posted in two weeks.

Soooooooo the only T2D announcement is that it'll be 2011? Nothing announced about C# or other features/changes yet? Eric said there would be. :-)

I expect him to blog about it when they've had a meeting, as that's been their pattern lately. I hope they can manage something Monday :)

We just had an update not that long ago and John was talking about even more updates not that long ago. He was after all just put in charge of it.
Is it due because of the time in between releases? By that account then Torque 3D would be on it's deathbed, but it's not.
Of course though it doesn't help that Microsoft is slow on the ball about getting out the Binary version for it's XNA Community but that's another story altogether.

An update is due because John announced a version plan which named 3.2.1 as being released in January 2010, and the version after that for April 2010. It's March now and and we've not heard a word of what is happening regarding a release date for the January release let alone the April one. John said last week he'd make a blog with an impressive feature list sometime last weekend. Well, needless to say, a week has gone by and the fabled posting has not occurred, which sadly is what seems to be occuring quite often with TorqueX, and now we're told the announcement is another two weeks away.
There are many bugs and poeple needing help with the engine, but noone knowledgable from GG posts to give help given the documentation of the 3D part is virtually non-existant apart from an occasional post by John (who I'm sure is quite busy as it is with his own company to run). if there are any other developers working on TorqueX other than John we honestly don't know about it.
I don't know about you but I want to make a game, and TorqueX currently has too many roadblocks. I want to see it succeed but it appears to me that GG does not have the resources available to allocate to it's development the way they do with Torque 3D.

There have been no updates to TorqueX since I bought it 6 months ago (it was at 3.1.4 then). The binary version for Microsoft has nothing to do with the development from GG's perspective, except that GG are dropping that version. An update is due because John announced a version plan which named 3.2.1 as being released in January 2010, and the version after that for April 2010.
