-------Technical Stuff--------- Project : offworld is not affiliated with Metro Goldwyn Mayer, United Artists, Gekko Film Corp., ShowTime, Dean Devlin, or with anyone else who might own the rights of the STARGTE movie or the STARGTE SG-1 TV series. This project is not meant to infringe on such rights, an only personal fullfillment is obtained therein. The project is no official Game on the Stargate topic, and it has nothing to do with the official Stargate computer game, Stargate: The Alliance. It is not meant to infringe the rights on the official game, and it doesn't compete with or challenges the official game. This mod is not based on the TV show or movie, it is only inspired by it. Our story runs in parallel to the Stargate SG-1 TV series, and there will be no original characters being used in the our mod.

I'm a big fan of Stargate myself. I know you've got the disclaimer and all up there but I still believe your asking for trouble with this. I mean, your graphics look close to what's in Stargate and your even using the same names like DHD (Dial Home Device).
I went through something similar with ideas I wanted to "borrow" from Star Wars.
If I'm not mistaken they "MGM" did shutdown a mod that was based on Stargate.
The models look good though!

actually... that portal does look a lot like the stargate in Stargate, but, change it a bit and it can't be a problem seeing how Stargate 'borrowed' it's stargate from other movies and books and cartoons and ancient egyptian hyroglyphics... :P

Maybe it would be better to make a new gate that looks nothing like the stargate (I doubt it would be hard)
You could still use the stargate idea (visit new worlds), but make it look nothing like SG (make your own style)
Edit: Your website says "using the Torque Game Engine with the Torque Shader Engine"
TGE and TSE are 2 different engines.

You're not asking for trouble, you're asking for a C&D:www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=8453

I thought that the shader engine was an addon, my apologies. thx for the info.
@ James Frasca
ouch, I didn't see that.
--------------------------------
Well, I guess project : offworld is no longer, or I will just re-make everything according to my own ideas like Anton Bursch said. I will have to think all of this over before I make a final no more project or change stuff.

Don't give up hope!
You can definately use Stargate as your inspiration, you just got to make it look as if everything wasn't just taken directly from the movies and t.v. shows.
I mean, a device that transports someone through a wormhole isn't exactly the idea of the Stargate creators.
Its the particular way, with the spining ring and locking in chevrons with a DHD and all that is their idea.
Get my point?
I'm borrowing concepts from Star Wars but you won't be able to look at my game and say, "Hey its Star Wars". But you may be able to say, "Hey, this planet has two suns like Tatooine!". But that's where the similarities end with my game. I also have a wormhole type device but its not a ring and its a lot bigger!

I'd say tighten your focus, be really clear on what the gameplay is going to be like, and then change your concepts until they are very much your own. I mean, face it... Star Wars: A New Hope borrowed HEAVILY from Kurosawa and Campbell, but Lucas took those basic ideas and made them his own.
You can do the same.

Vin, it looks like your project is VERY early in development --- you've got plenty of time to change your ideas. I'd say tighten your focus, be really clear on what the gameplay is going to be like, and then change your concepts until they are very much your own. I mean, face it... thx for the encouragement everyone! I'v decided that Project : offworld will continue! The main idea will be the same, but not Stargate. I will keep you posted, I have some ideas and concepts in my head; just have to sketch them, scan them, and upload :)

The concept of magical transporting portals is not new. Using the graphic with the gate, locks and the button is a complete rip off. Try to think out of the box and make an original gate structure.

Well Vin, you've got the modeling part down. It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Man MGM must really hate making money. Such a waste

You could just modify the textures and especially the names of everything in the game until nobody can reasonably accuse you of violating MGM's intellectual property rights. This is a serious matter to the lawyers involved, just make sure your project has nothing in it that would give them a reason to come after you and everybody will get along just fine. I suggest possibly reworking the gate to appear less like the SG gate as well as changing the name of your Dial Home Device.

might be supprising, but i think that's more likely. no company would give up free money :P

@Ian, it could be that they actually recognized that the game sucked, and would like to not totally alienate their fans with a POS gamemight be supprising, but i think that's more likely. no company would give up free money :P

There is a company in Arizona working on a Star Gate MMRPG, and they have the rights. Just letting you know this now to avoid possible problems in the future. It should be to hard to change the gate design and change the name. I'm not sure how much I can say about this game I would not want to get my friend that works for this company in trouble.

thx.

@ Eugene, Really? An StarGate MMRPG? Any chance you have a link to the site or more info?thx.
