Today, however, unconfirmed reports began to surface that the publisher was indeed shutting down. Several stock- and Interplay-game-related sites claimed to have received reports from Interplay employees that they were told by the company's human resources department to file for unemployment insurance. According to the sites, staffers were also told to collect their belongings by 5 p.m. PDT on Tuesday because the property managers were preparing to lock all Interplay employees out of their Irvine offices.

Seems like Interplay is going down. Such a shame...

I'm so tired of good game studios being shut down by idiotic company's like that! If they can't run it, they obviously shouldn't have bought it in the first place!

And look at that last sentence in that quote. Geez.

If I lose my keys, I would be locked out of my house. It would be a temporary situation.

Indie on!!!

PS: *Sniff* Bard's Tale was one of the first games to give me the RPG itch.

Interplay was primarily a publisher who did a minor bit of in-house work. In the past they did fund some great games and were either an incubator of great talent who are today making great games (Troika and Obsidian being two such examples) and also gave other studios a chance to try again and produce great games even after their first one was a bit of a failure (Bioware with Shattered Steel being given the opportunity to do an AD&D game which we know as Baldurs Gate).

Although it is sad to see Interplay leave the market, In my honest opinion this demise is the cause of simply poor management on the part of Interplay and its controlling company. In recent years Interplay has burnt a lot of bridges with employees and developers and have honestly only been a mere shade of their former selves.

Another unfortunate thing to point out that is not mentioned by the poster of this article is that it's not just Interplay employees who are getting shafted by the closure, there are also numerous development studios who are still owed royalties for their games that were published by Interplay. This in turn may have a trickle down affect on some smaller development studios, which is quite disheartening to say the least.

Let's hope that all the hard working people that were still left at today's skeleton of Interplay and anyone else affected by their closure can land on their feet and move on from this.

PS: It's times like this I am glad to be an Indie, there is no one but ourselves to make or break us.

Oh maann, Bard's Tale, that was some good stuff. So was Fallout, one of the best RPG's ever - also published by Interplay.

Hmmm, maybe this will give Obsidian a chance to snag the Fallout rights. It's not like Interplay was doing anything with them anyway...

@Logan: I didn't know more studios would be affected by this. That sucks indeed.
