Tunnels through terrain!
by FruitBatInShades · in General Discussion · 08/18/2004 (9:28 am) · 52 replies
Sorry to post this in general but I saw a thread a while ago on DIF's underground and the terrain cutting through them at the entrance. I cannot find it again :(
I have made a tunnel I need to go through the ground but the terrain stops me entering the tunnel. Anyone got any ideas where I'm going wrong? It's just a tunnel DIF that is placed below the terrain level with the entrance outside the terrain.

Enter the game, hit F11 for editor mode, then F6 for terrain editor.
In brush menu, check these options :
- box brush
- hard brush
- size 1 x 1
In Action menu, check "Set empty"
Then, now, clicking on the terrain should create holes (you will see the sky).
I suppose it is better if your tunnel DIF completely fit the hole !
Hope it can help ;)

I think you must create 2 holes in the terrain, one for entry and a second for the exit of the tunnel.Enter the game, hit F11 for editor mode, then F6 for terrain editor.

If you want to block 1 entrance of the tunnel you can just leave the terrian there, you will be able to pop through it from the inside (kinda gives you a one way through)

I solved it by digging a hole in it too. But I don't think you need to dig an exit hole... do backfacing terrain polys block you?

Thanks for the solution Pat, that was on my "Many things to do yet.." list. I appreciate the info. :)

Dig an entrance and an exit for your tunnel otherwise it becomes a one way route. Not good for say racing games where tracks can be reversed.:o)

Could someone who managed to do this post a screenshot?

The best way I found was to place your tunnel at the desired area
set empty squares
use adjust height.. make sure your square size is set to 1x1 (alt1)
do your best to snug the terrain around your interior..
you can also set portals on your interior before you export it from quark, this will make any terrain that is inside your interior invisible but the collision still responds so you still need to set empty, but it really helps when you have little pieces of terrain sticking through your roof/walls... try to avoid any terrain poking through the floors or on the lower walls as this can and will hamper your character if you collide with it.

In my experience of placing tunnels through terrain it sometimes is difficult to fit the terrain around the tunnel unless the walls are really thick. The best way I found was to place your tunnel at the desired area

In the mission editor, select your interior, and then click the expand all button. Look for something like "showTerrainInside" and set it to zero. Place it as you please.

I think there is a better solution to this than digging:In the mission editor, select your interior, and then click the expand all button. Look for something like "showTerrainInside" and set it to zero. Place it as you please.

Entrance to the tunnel is at the right...

Close up of the entrance peering through the tunnel...

You're really wasting time by making holes, you know. My method is way easier to use.

Does "showTerrainInside" actually do anything for you? It never has for me!

Bryce, showTerrainInside interiors will make it so any terrain inside of interiors won't render. That doesn't make a hole in the terrain; the collision is still there. Using "Set Clear" is the only way to make holes in the terrain. It's a good idea to test things before you post them.

My question again, Does showTerrain actually work? It never has for me! The collision is still there and sometimes it renders anyway or has this been fixed in 1.3

The terrain still renders if your outside of the interior's portal or something like that.

The benefits of this function is simply to clean up any edges of terrain that are poking through your walls, floors, ceilings.

I agree with Josh, showTerrainInside is only to make the terrain invisible inside interiors, the collision is still going to be there and effect your character, you will still need to use set empty....The benefits of this function is simply to clean up any edges of terrain that are poking through your walls, floors, ceilings.

First set the clear sections in the terrain (the holes)...
And then, if there are any sections of terrain poking through (and they don't really interefere with the player's movement) then set showTerrainInside to "off" and you're done.

So basically you should use both.First set the clear sections in the terrain (the holes)...
And then, if there are any sections of terrain poking through (and they don't really interefere with the player's movement) then set showTerrainInside to "off" and you're done.
