Linux suggestions for a new dev machine

by Edward Gardner · in Torque Game Engine · 12/13/2004 (8:32 pm) · 5 replies

I have an Athlon 900 (ish) and a GF TI 4200 (128 megs) and 384mb RAM in a machine whose hdd has just died.

So, I picked up a new hdd, and was thinking I didn't have a good dev Linux client. I have a RH9 server that I can do builds on, but no video card makes testing difficult ;)

Soooooooo, what's a good testing OS nowadays? I would do RH, just because i have disks handy, but I know people are damn near religious about it, so, with those specs what would you recommend for TGE based dev and testing?

I'm currently using Slackware. Although I haven't done any Torque development yet (too busy playing your game & orbz), my first game was developed under it with the Anjuta IDE running in KDE. As far as I know, Slackware uses the stock kernel. I will be using Slackware once I get into TGE to create a 3-d version of what I have done. Occasionally, when a binary package out there is only availabe as an RPM, Slackware has a tool to convert it to the native package format in Slack. It has worked good for me so far.

My system is a P-III 667 with 320 MB RAM & an FX-5200.

I'm not certain if this really answers your question, but I've got several Torque based games, all of which were no trouble with regards to the installation & playing of those games.

Just my 2 cents (Canadian) worth.

I have used RH, Mandrake and tried Gentoo. Of the lot I liked Mandrake the best.
IMHO which distro to use is a personal pref, each have there own pros/cons.

Be prepaired to hear the usual "I use X, its the best" etc.. all personal opinions!!!

I also have a machine with FX5200, a PIV 3GHz. It runs Slackware 10 with NVidia drivers. TGE-SDK installed easily, and performance is excellent.

Quite true Ron! In the end, all that truly matters is a new linux developer. As it is, it's a bit of a let-down when the two newest games out on GG are Windows based. Hopefully, they can find Linux devs for their team! My PC gaming is only on Linux now, so every new developer/game out there helps.

I'll probably beg Ron to help me set it up anyway ;)
