Segmented meshes in blender?

Hello everyone, I'm having some troubles with exporting a segmented mesh from blender and I'm hoping that someone can help me solve it :]
As far as I understand you are supposed to connect different meshes to nodes with different names and then you can go into the scripts and hide and show meshes as you like on the model. We have tried this with one of the standard models and it works fine (made the head invisible) but when I try this on my own model nothing happens, I've tried using armatures, bones and empties as "nodes" and even naming the mesh itself but nothing seems to work, am I missing something obvious? Does anyone have a .blend that works that they are willing to share?

I'm not 100% on this but try naming your vertex groups on the mesh then attaching the vertex groups, to individual nodes.

@Dreamer: And by "nodes" you mean?.. I havn't found anything actually named "nodes" in blender, thats why I've tried bones and empties etc. Since thoose are the points you use for cameras, mountpoints and so on.
