What do you expect from Content Packs?

by Ajari Wilson · in General Discussion · 08/02/2005 (1:26 pm) · 17 replies

I have a few questions for the GG staff first if they can answer them, followed by a question for everybody if you guys don't mind.

1) I was wondering, what are the single best and single worst selling content packs on Garage Games and how many total down load purchases have each gained so far? I don't know GG's policy on sharing this kind of information but it's something that will help me a great deal in making an important decision. Or you can tell me what is the highest number of sales for a single pack and what is the lowest without saying names if you wish.

2) I was also wondering if content packs sell better than games on this site or is it the other way around.

3) What is the average "personality" of sales patterns. What I mean is do content packs have big sales in the first week or month and then kind of tail off and stop selling, or is it a constant and steady purchase pattern throughout the months and years? Or is it something completley different?

4) And my last question is for everybody. What kinds of content packs do you want to see that haven't been done before or would like to see more of? Why would you be interested in such a pack and what would you expect from it in terms of quality, quantity, and content, say if the pack sells for the average $19.95?

Thanks you guys,
-Ajari-

1) one of the GG staff have already said they can't give out that sort of infomation.

2) I would guess games sell more than content packs as most of the community are just here to buy games (and not TGE owners) also not every TGE owner wants to buy a content pack.

3) I would guess most of the sales are done in the first month (because of the marketing done for them), then a "steady purchase pattern throughout the months and years"

4) If would be good to see more content packs you can change and learn from i.e the adam pack and the BT content packs.
Maybe packs such as helicopter, boat, sub and aeroplane packs?

Ajari - The thing I seem to need most is animations.

Animations using the stock skeleton. In several sizes... Say small, medium, large, X-Large...

A set for each of the following:
- Carrying Pistol
- Carrying Rifle
- Carrying nothing
- Carrying random object (could be a magic wand, or a knife, or a flower or whatever)

Maybe some random animations like offering the flower or stabbing with the knife... Or pistol whipping....

Animations are a bitch. If I had a full set of animations like that I would never have to deal with them again... i would pay 50 $ for it too... As would anyone else who needs animations.

Especially if it covered almost every base.

Well everyone always wanted a horse pack and that never came, however I agree with Joseph. I purchased the Bravetree girl pack and was impressed with the documentation. While it's not a walkthrough it does give you most of the information you would need to create your own character.

Bravetree are learning tools as well as usable quick mockups for your games while others are shooting for the usable character like the Adam Pack. Biggest problem there though is you wind up with about 5 different games with the same exact hero.

@David - I disagree on the 5 games with the same hero. The Bravetree girl pack has bene out for a long time... and there are no published games with her in it, as far as I an tell.

I can only respond to item #3. Sales are generally consistent over time. There is a falloff after the first month, but after that, sales are generally consistent on a month to month basis over a long period of time.

can't give out sales numbers, but it is enough (if it is a good pack) to make it worthwhile to create one.

Similar to chris.
The number 1 thing i need just now is an animation where the character is carrying nothing.

John - Josh "The_Force" told me that callling player.setActionThread("looknw"); makes the player put his arms down. Apparently the look animaiton is the only hting that controls the players arm position. Might want to look into that. I am :)

I want to see contents packs that make fun of other contents packs.. i think that would be amusing.

Contents packs that challenge what it really IS to be a contents pack.. Maybe has some deeper meaning.. for example, "challenges the perspective on life without contents packs.. and the social change caused by the pack at the time!"

I think that would be good.. but then again.. I'm not really a contents pack advocate.. so i wouldn't know!

I am not much of an artist, and I love to buy good quality content packs.
My development efforts focus mainly on pseudo-realistic sci-fi.

Here is a list of things that I would like to see and would probably buy:

Modern-day or near-future buildings and props (barricades, shrubbery, sidewalks, fire hydrants, etc)

Content packs that provide new code or script functionality, such as the
3d-diggers.de blacksmith shop with the opening doors. Something with
a working elevator (real-life style ;) would be awesome.

A melee-combat content pack containing whatever code and animations are necessary to
drop in melee-combat capability into stock TGE with the TGE character skeleton.

Realistic weapons content pack, rifles, handguns, grenades, rocket launchers, flame throwers, etc.

Realistic character content pack with expanded movement code: crouching, crawling, swimming,
etc. I know there is a resource for this but it would be nice to have a character pack that at
least had supporting animations for these types of things along with the basic code to do it with a stock TGE install.

New vehicle type content packs: Hover vehicle content pack (realistic military-style hovercraft) would be very welcome although I'm not sure how useful.
helicopter vehicle content pack, with the source and everything to make it work would sell VERY well
based on all the talk about helicopters in these forums.

Really I would buy any content pack that contained any game object(s) you might encounter in your average Grand Theft Auto game.

I'd like to see more packs that are geared towards specific themes such as beaches and caves, but since the audiences for this would likely be limited... well, I'm not too hopeful :P

I haven't actually bought any of the current content packs though, and other than Aste's 2nd content pack I'm really not that interested in any... (the waterfall effects are really impressive!)

@ chris. thanks for that, i'l certainly look into that

The thing about content packs is that basically you(or you're company) don't have one of a kind material so if other people want to use it in they're games you get the same scenery and objects in 2 different games(I don't now about other people but I usually notice and remember misc objects in games)

anyway the kind of content pack that I might possibly buy is environment object pack(trees rocks grass, orcs and other generic stuff like that(textures too- one can never have enough textures!!:))
And scripts and such that offer additional functionality and cool features like camera or spell casting systems (and all things that can be easily customizable and that are not that important like whole levels or characters (animations are ok though :))

Without a doubt tons of stock animations which can be applied to the torque skeleton would be very helpful. Especially melee. Also for Adam and Ava.

I'm pretty sure I saw an advert for an animation pack lately...

Yep, after a brief search, here it is: www.garagegames.com/products/172/

More details at: www.torque-motion.com/

Looks like someone took this thread seriously, and made rather a lot of rather good animations. :o)

First.. I have to agree with Chris Lobambard and say without question, without doubt, we absolutely could use characters with more (and ftlog, better) animations. Please, at a minimum if you provide a character, provide the standard five state animations (run, back, jump, side-step, landing) in both WITH and WITHOUT weapon forms.

And btw, I bought the Torque Animation Pack, and was not terribly impressed. You can read my review here:

www.garagegames.com/pg/product/reviews.php?id=172

Some people bought it and loved it though, so YMMV.

The other animation I would absolutely love to see is in every character pack is a top-blend hit-recoil animation. That is, the character recoiling from taking blow or bullet, which would be blended with the other action animations, as the aiming blends are.

I'd like to see all character packs coming with the look animations.

And its annoying how the height of kork has made a lot of different content packs not really work together, because people end up going with different heights. As they wanted a realistic height. Or you want to use a realistic height model in something that was made for a kork sized model.
