I got one of those too, like Phil. Works fine, but gets hot really fast.

That chipset is not going to give you shader 2.0 and 3.0...
The 1.x shaders are rapidly becoming obsolete...
I don't even think that chipset has hardware shaders??
Edit: Did a little research.. even looked at the intel site for that chipset.
Nothing clear on what shaders it supports.
Suggest ATI Moblity X600, Geforce 2 Go 6200 or better...
Stay away from IBM graphics for development.. just headache on stuff they skimp
on or leave out.

No that won't work.... at least not in the long run. That chipset is not going to give you shader 2.0 and 3.0...

The only laptops I currently recommend are the Dell 9300 with 6800 go or a Dell XPS with the new 7800 go. These give equivalent performance to a beefy desktop machines.
There are also manufacturers like Rock and alienware who do powerful enough machines. The dell 9300 is the cheapest laptop I have seen that can be seriously used for TSE development though.
I know these are quite expensive solutions but, if you skimp now you will only end up paying for it later.

If you are looking to do development work for TSE on a laptop, then you will definitely need a 6600 go at minimum for the graphics card and about a gig of ram to handle the compiling of the codebase. The only laptops I currently recommend are the Dell 9300 with 6800 go or a Dell XPS with the new 7800 go. I think the Toshiba notebook has too less power (for the long term) to run TSE on it. It's a Celeron CPU which is slow as hell (don't trust alone the 2,6 GHz frequency). 256 MByte is too less. 512 MByte is minimum. 20 GByte HD is also to small in my eyes.
Take a look on this machine here. For me it fits perfectly. But that's always a personal decision - find out what your needs are and then look which notebook fits best. Also things might be important (they were it for me) like extended service warranty (esp. for the display!), additional accu's and stuff.
Just my 2 Euro-Cents :-)

In my opinion you need at least a notebook with a ATI Mobility X600. Better watch out for a X700 which supports the 3.0 shaders. I'm personally running an Acer Aspire 1691 notebook with a 1,6 Ghz cpu and a X600. TSE runs smooth on it. If possible, watch out for a notebook with a NVidia card as their Linux support is mucho better than from ATI (if that matters to you).I think the Toshiba notebook has too less power (for the long term) to run TSE on it. The Dell Inspiron 9300 is a really good laptop and I was able to get mine for less than $1500 by watching Dell site for deals.

Did you buy the 9300 with the 256 MB Geforce 6800? 1500,- is very cheap for that! :-)

Oh, my bad. Thanks Matt for the correction. Did you buy the 9300 with the 256 MB Geforce 6800? 1500,- is very cheap for that! :-)

I have a HP Pavilion Ze2000 (ATI X200m) that I use just for compiling the engine part of my project, but TSE runs fine on that too.cost - $600

Never buy a celeron for any dev work. the ram also is a bit low, and the hard drive size is really small. On top of that, the video card is horrible.

Celerons cost more then a cheep HP with AMD Mobile, but the AMD mobile seems to work fine and the celeron crashes on about 40% of the programs that developers use. The actual Pentium works great but the Celeron is only good for running programs like the notepad, Windows XP restore, and other system fail screens. It's almost like it is built to crash!

Maybe get a laptop with something like a mobile ATI graphics card?
