Serious system error
by Noah Solomon · in Torque Game Engine · 12/14/2005 (3:57 am) · 14 replies
Every time I try to run one of the executables in the Torque SDK, it goes to a blue screen that tells me a serious system error has occured. There are other details, but I don't get a chance to read tham because the system immediately reboots. Any help would be appreciated.

Usually it says something like:
The two sets that are bolded -- write them down and post them here. Don't be concerned if what you have is different from here. It won't be the same.

Can you post what the error code was when your system bluescreened, and what module caused it?Usually it says something like:
Quote:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If this is the first time you've seen this error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer
for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

It reboots so quickly that I can't read much of anything well, but I do see the file listed is "nv4_mini.sys"

Do you have the NVidia console app running? We had some weird problems here in our labs when the NVidia drivers were out of sync with the console version. It happened when we would move the mouse (trying to update the display, we believed). Downloading the latest drivers and control panel applet made it stop rebooting like mad. That was a while back, though.

If you right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, select the "Advanced" tab, click "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery", and uncheck "Automatically restart", you should be able to view the BSOD in its full ... blue ... glory.
Yeah, the nv4_mini.sys file appears to be the nVidia drivers. If you update them to their latest version, as David suggested, the problem may correct itself.

The first line was non-existent, and the second line reads: nv4_mini.sys - Address F942122A base at F93E2000, DateStamp 43751a19

Also, I would suggest disabling any shadowing or whatever in your BIOS... perhaps even double-check your AGP bus speed.
