Long pauses

by Andrew Carnegie · in Torque Game Builder · 06/24/2006 (11:40 pm) · 13 replies

Hi,

I have just installed the trial and I am having problems. If I minimize the game builder it takes approx 30 seconds to restore to full size. I have also tried using the client full screen and switching from OpenGL to D3D but I still get the same long pauses. It makes it impossible to follow the tutorials because moving from the .pdf back to the client is so frustrating. Has anyone got the same issues under XP x64?

My system specs are as follows

XP x64
AMD X2 3800
2 GB Ram
Ati X850 running Catalyst 6.5 x64
DX 9.0c
Resolution 1280 x 1024 @32 bit

Hmmm..... I had that problem with an old DOS program.
What I did is cleared a few things out from the processes tab in task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete).
I doubt it will work for you, as TGB isn't an old DOS program, but its worth a try.

I've been using TGB on XP x64 for some time now and haven't had anything near the delay you're experiencing. It's been (at the very worst) on par with Photoshop (maybe 1-2 secs) and that's on my slow-as-dirt laptop. If you're running TGB in full-screen you might want to check what resolution it's set to because switching between resolutions takes a little extra time. Also, I generally find it easier to run TGB in windowed mode when I have to switch between TGB and another app (mainly when I'm tweaking script). Anyway, 30 seconds is definitely not a normal delay.

I have tried both windowed and fullscreen to no avail. I thought it would be related to x64 but obviously not.

This issue only effects TGB. I have no problems running Maya7, Photoshop CS2 (with a large file) and a few other custom apps without any noticable slowdown so I am not sure what could be causing the problems.

This sounds like the dual core bug in AMD's drivers--have you downloaded their patch?

Which patch would that be Stephen? I had a quick look on the AMD site but I am unsure of what to download.

Hi F.W.

Its odd, I JUST joined and on my first forum view I have the answer! ;) Its a simple driver install distributed directly from AMD. I previously had this issue and found the answer after searching and searching! Here is the link:

AMD link to patches

There are two driver versions (each classified as drivers). The first is for x64 versions of windows and the second is for x32 versions of windows. This should solve the problem, let me know if it works!

Note that I'm saying this is 100% your solution, but the symptoms have been seen before and this download (get the right one for your 64 bit or 32 bit status) have fixed it for others in the past.

Alternatively, it may be a video card driver issue, hard to tell for sure from your described situation.

Hi Stephen,

I already have the AMD x64 driver and also the latest driver for my graphics card and I wouldn't want to upset my system too much seeing as this is the only app that seems to present problems. I suspect it could be the x64 driver for my graphics card.

I may set up a dual boot at a later date and install XP x32 to give this a try.

I have been told that this could be a bug that happens when TGB loses focus (a known bug perhaps?). Can anyone confirm this bug?

I just installed XP x86 on a different partition expecting it to clear up the problem but no go. As soon as TGB loses focus it locks up for a good 30 seconds. It must be hardware related. It's so annoying as this is the first app I have had trouble with for at least 12 months :(

I don't think it is your processor as I have experienced the same problem on my Pentium 4 machine and my AMD machine. Also sometimes the mouse gets very slow (10 seconds or so to catch up); this seems to improve when I move to the edit toolbox from the create.

I've experienced the same thing with TGE (1.3) on some computers.

I gave up with it. I will perhaps revisit TGB at a later date to see if the problem has improved.

This problem is no longer present in v1.5. I am now able to take this for a spin :)
