Idea for Game (feedback please)

by Luke Hopkins · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/03/2006 (1:05 pm) · 10 replies

I just wanted to see how these game appeals to people. I will start work on the game very soon and I will be giving out a full mission plan later on this week.

Here is a basic structure of my game idea.

It's the year 2012 and kid's entertainment has evolved. There is a new game that is played instead of Paintballing and Laser Quest. Players walk in to a white room and once the team is ready someone from HQ starts the game. The level is projected on to the white walls and creates a 3D level that can be physically touched. The game is a laser gun based game where you have to shoot you friends with laser guns and hide and run once you die the player gets teleported back to HQ. Except a virus has leaked into the system and now who ever plays comes up against the virus and the virus takes form as a player in the game. When the virus kills you die in real life. Great clans have been taken out by this virus and now it's your clans turn to take out this virus. The people in charge of the system are now making you better weapons for you to play with you can configure you weapons differently to everyone else. Later on in the game you will have the chance in have powers ups in order to defeat the virus. All you have to do now is Load the Game and defeat the virus

I will be adding more later on and I am still thinking of a name at the moment. So far I've come up with names like Social Virus, but ill properly change it later on.

Please give me some feedback as i would like to hear what you think to the idea.

It's not really an idea for a game, more like a backstory for a generic FPS game.

Why would people continue to log into a game that is likely to get them killed in real life? Does the virus have some effect on the real world? Is the real world so dull and boring that people would risk their lives to play this game? Can they not just shut the system down and reboot it to kill off the virus?

If you could actually flesh the story out, it might help a bit.

You dont normally die in real life its the virus that kills you in real life because it never used to be there so people just used to go there for the fun, but the virus has made the game deadly

But if they used to go there for fun, but now it's deadly, why do they continue to go?

You'll always get one or two nutters who would go in, but it's more likely that if a game was actually killing people, the game would be shut down.

You just need to sketch out some answers to some of these questions so that the story hangs together. Given that it takes place just 6 years from now (and seemingly here on Earth) you don't have the benefit of great leaps of technology or an alien world to explain parts of your game.

True it was just a quick idea for a game didnt think it thought much ill think of a new one im just trying to think of new ideas becuase it pointless to make a game thats been made before but then it ponitless to make a game that doesn't make sense

It sounds a little bit like the movie Avalon

Why not adjust the story a bit?
Here's an idea:

Six young players are having the time of their lives, playing the brand new virtual reality action/adventure game
"Raiders Quest", when suddenly, all input from the outside world is shut out. At first the children are scared, but luckily one man is able to patch through to them inside the game.

He explains to them that a crippling virus has entered the system and that their minds have been trapped in the virtual world. This virus is slowly eating away at the game's souce code, and within a few days everything will be deleted...including them.

By now it seems all hope is lost. But what's this? The children still have their game equipment and laser rifles.
Why not venture across the gaming world and destroy the virus from the inside?
It will be a dangerous endeavor, nearly impossible even. But luckily the oldest of the players finds that he has the ability to hack into the game's source as well.

And so they set off to destroy the virus (And whatever obstacles it has set up in their paths)
With the oldest of the team slowly uncovering the abilities he wields in this virtual world...

Sounds just like an episode of Star Trek the next generation. Their holodeck was always freaking out and the danger became real.

This would be an awesome FPS. You could have specialized laser rifles and such. I don't think this could corporate into an online game, unless it was co-op except with 6 people. It could be like an adventure, except you look at a playing list, chose your teamates, and go. Sure, the teamates may not agree, but you could have a bot setting. Chat would be also fun. Let me know what this evolves into!
