What version is TSE on

Ok. I was reading over at MyDream that TSE is on Milestone 3.5???
Is this true? The official stuff I've seen on the site says Milestone 2. I've been holding off purchasing TSE until it got to Milestone 3, mainly because I have other expenses at the moment, if TSE release is a ways off then its not as high a priority, but I definately want to get in on the Early Adopter discount on TSE. I just didn't see any point in spending the money until it was nearer release.
I don't want to miss the boat though. If TSE is past milestone 3, then now is the time to purchase. Can anyone enlighten me? And what features have they added in Milestone 3/3.5?
Thanks

Those plans changed, so perhaps you're confusing the old ones with the new?
M2 and M3 are feature-wise quite the same, but MS3 is alot more robust and stable. It has the merge from MBU and TGE 1.4. You can tell the difference by simply trying them out, but there are no new features and if that's what you want then I would purchase it at MS4.

Previously Milestone 3 was meant to be something different than what it is right now. Those plans changed, so perhaps you're confusing the old ones with the new?

Could someone post a link to the new plan? (Not on the private forums please, can't access them)
What is the final Milestone? In the posts I have read, it was milestone 4 (TSE 1.0).
My concern is not really what new features there are in MS3, its how far TSE is away from release. Buying TSE is not a question, but right now my PC really needs an upgrade. If waiting to get TSE would cost me the EA discount though, I'll rather get it now and delay the upgrade.

But if you take a look at how GG did it with TGB early adopter release, I'm sure they will announce it several times that the early adopter period ends at a specific date. I can't imagine that GG will suddenly switch from one day to the next from early adopter to final without notice. Wouldn't make sense to me.
I'm sure if you read this site a couple of times a week, you will see this notice from them. But if buying is not a problem for you, I'd suggest to jump in now. A lot of changes happen to TSE currently and it makes sense to follow those changes already to get an understanding of the things behind.
Just my 2 Euro cent... :-)

@Gareth: Currently the old plan is still valid as far as I know (I'm TSE owner) - so a MS 4 will come before the final release. Nobody except GG currently knows when it will reach MS 4.But if you take a look at how GG did it with TGB early adopter release, I'm sure they will announce it several times that the early adopter period ends at a specific date. I too think GarageGames will announce end of EA a few times before it hits. Probably nothing to worry about until MS4 hits. It needs to go trough testing before it gets out of EA.

Martin, the old plan was to get terrain editors in by MS3 and the other milestones were different. I'm talking 2004.I too think GarageGames will announce end of EA a few times before it hits. Probably nothing to worry about until MS4 hits. It needs to go trough testing before it gets out of EA.

You're right, Stefan. What I meant was that Brian/Ben said that MS 4 will include all the new and fancy shadows and stuff and they didn't say anything about a MS 5 or so. But you're right, some of the the stuff they mentioned was shifted in the MS 4 release.

I heard a rumor that TGE was no longer going to be free updates, and that starting with 1.5 you would have to pay for each update. Is TSE going to that model too (in which case you probably will be better off to just buy it when you need it)?

I have never read anything official about that. Unless said otherwise by GG, don't believe it.

I haven't heard anything official RE TSE.
With TGB at $250 full source, TGE officially announced to increase in price in the future, TSE advertised as an "Early Adopter" product, it's a safe assumption that a price increase is planned for TSE's official release.

Sure...From the TGE product page:

TGE 1.4 is the last free upgrade in the Torque Game Engine line. If you're looking for an upgrade beyond TGE, you should check out the Torque Shader Engine.

Hey guys, regarding the last free major update issue. We have not charged for a Torque update in the four or so years it has been on the market. It took us about a year to go from 1.3 to 1.4, yet we didn't charge Torque owners a dime for the upgrade. We have continuously worked on the engine, and continued to give away free upgrades.
We could have said nothing about this and just charged an upgrade for the next version. Instead, we decided to be honest and let you know what to expect in the future. When you buy Photoshop or Dreamweaver or Flash, you always know there will be an unpgrade in that you will have to puchase in the future. We are now saying that Torque is no different. Some day, there will be a new version of the $100 TGE, but for now, we have just released a shiny new fixed function pipeline engine that is being used by commercial developers, NASA, educational institutions, and developers around the world. You know your development investment is protected if you ever want to upgrade to shader technology and higher end graphics cards or even if you want to bring your game to consoles.
The only difference is that for the first time we have said that the next version of Torque will require current owners to pay an upgrade price. Of course, you are never required to upgrade to the new version. Torque is perfectly capable of shipping games, and you can add anything to the engine you want by writing it yourself. If our update saves you time or does something that you want, then you will have to decide if our reasonably priced upgrade fee is worth it to you (don't ask how much, we don't know yet... but, have we ever been unreasonable?).

No i'm sure that we'll all get 1.0 HOWEVER for someone who wants to buy it now while its cheep and use it later it MIGHT not be the best idea because he may not get around to it till version 2.0 is out and it would suck to have to buy it twice and never use the first one. I just wanted to get the thought out there.

Its on the TSE page. Buy while in EA, price = $150. Buy after offical release, price = $300. If there are any upgrades later, you might have to pay for them, depending on what the upgrade is (I wouldn't expect to pay for bug fixes for instance).
As to having to pay for TGE upgrades after 1.4, yeah, well whatever. Wasn't TGE released in 2000 or so? 6 years or free updates is astounding value. Especially given that I earn the cost of TGE in one days work at my day job. I doubt upgrades will cost as much as the full engine, so whoop-de-doo. I'm happy to support them.

Um, I think you have the wrong idea Pauliver. I just don't want to miss out on the half price TSE discount. Even if they charge for later upgrades, that doesn't change the fact that I got the main deal for 50% off. If an upgrade to TSE costs say $40, then $150 + $20 is still less than full price $300 + $40. The cost of later upgrades has no bearing on this discount thing. Its on the TSE page. From product page:
Special Note: If you purchase the Early Adopter now, you get all updates including the final version for the EA price of only $150, resulting in a savings of $45.
Right?

We ARE at MS 3.5 right now. MS4 will be coming very soon, but there will be some time between the MS4 release and 1.0 to work out remaining issues.

I might consider purchase but I need to see something first. I need to know that the dif file format has been re-worked or even better replaced. Will you be doing a much needed audio overhaul? Will the GUI editor and all world editors function bug free (as humanly possible)?
There's not really much information available to the public RE status of TSE so sorry to annoy you with these questions.
Actions speak louder than words ;)

So will there be a new demo available that reflects the quality of MS4, and or release 1.0? I might consider purchase but I need to see something first. - DIF is more or less the same as the TGE version with map2dif_plus... except of course that you can add shaders.
- World editors are functional right now, but there is no in-game terrain editing/terraforming. You can see the terrain and add/modify objects but you can't modify the terrain yet. GUI likewise is functional, though there are some resources that haven't been ported over to DirectX yet (user submitted resourcse)
- Audio is the same as in TGE.

I'm not sure how much any of this will change by the time it's all said and done. But here's how those things stand right now:- DIF is more or less the same as the TGE version with map2dif_plus... except of course that you can add shaders.

So considering your total investment, the savings is $45, but if you were buying TGE anyway, your savings is actually $145 or about 50% off.
EDIT: Is that correct? If so, you're both right!

Quote:Dual licensing for TSE will be available when complete with an 'indie'license for $295 and a commercial license for $995. Currently available is a special Early Adopter's price of $150. NOTE: Torque Shader Engine Early Adopter Release requires ownership of the Torque Game EngineThe way I've rationalized the two statements is that since the EA of TSE requires you purchase TGE for $100, then $100 + $150 = $45, which is $45 less than $295.
