How to costomize characters?

How do I replace that blue guy?
1. Do I make each seperate piece of the body and replace the current parts?
2. Or do I do something else complicated that I don't understand?
If it's #2 then can someone send me a link to a tutorial that will say what to do?
EDIT: I use Blender.

Start by building a simple model first. Then make a simple bone rig.
Ask questions when you get stuck :)
I'm on a Mac too and use Maya and Lightwave for animating and Luxology Modo for modeling. I've used Blender and I must say it's a powerful tool and well worth the effort in learning it. There is a book out there on animating characters for Blender - perhaps put that on your birthday wish list :)
Get stuck in and Good Luck!

Hey Tyler. If you're on a Mac and can't afford to buy one either Maya or Lightwave then Blender is your only real option. Give yourself some time with it, 3D isn't a walk in the park until you get your head wrapped round the tool and 3D space. Track down the numerous tutorials out there and stick with it. Well don't you create the bones then attach the mesh the the bones and then make each frame a bit different to make an animation?

Blender is a great application and stands up to 3dmax and all the rest but its controls are unintuitive, so you basically have to read the manual.
If your looking for something free though.. It's your only man.

Blender is great once you get to know it. Learn the hotkeys first, as always, and you'll be swimming through that program like nothin. Here are some fantastic video tutorials on torque/blender:
