TGEA - AFX and Linux yet?

by RedOctober · in General Discussion · 06/06/2007 (5:54 pm) · 11 replies

QUick question, is there AFX for TGEA yet, if not, is it in the works? And can the TGEA server be run/compiled on Linux yet, since I read somewhere that it can't be. Thanks.

AFX for TGEA is in the works. Sorry, don't know about the Linux and TGEA.

TGEA doesn't run on Linux, although GG maintain that a couple man months by skilled openGL coders could make it run on Linux & OSX... Basically, don't purchase TGEA and expect it to run on anything except windows without writing an entire graphics layer yourself.

So, basically, a Linux MMO server is out of the question without extensive programming?

Any MMO server requires extensive programming.

I am aware of this, but a Linux one is going to require even more than just running it on Windows at this point?

Seeing as how I don't run windows, to me it's not any easier or harder. If you're not experienced developing in Linux, I suggest you budget for external help in making that happen.

If it is only the graphics layer (having DX9 and no OGL) that is the problem, then can TGEA be compiled to run on linux as a dedicated server?

Why are you so deadset on a Linux server? Windows is actually a very capable server platform. The real big difference betweem them is pricing. We have several torque servers running Windows right now without any problems.

If you are planning on making an MMO, the operating system the server runs on ranks about a 3 in terms of overall importance.

That's really not what he was asking about though.

You won't be using the graphics layer on a dedicated server anyway. We got TGEA running on SuSe as a dedicated server.

@Stefan: Could you please share your changes

I'm sorry Karakurty, but I no longer have any of that with me. This must have been in like, Milestone 2? Most of us have moved on :)

In any case. What TGEA version are you using? It shouldn't take too long to port the TGEA server to Linux from where we are right now. How proficent are you in this area? I'd say a few days maximum and you should be up and running.

Sorry that I can't be of more help. I'm no Unix/BSD guru, but AFAIK a BSD port isn't as straight forward as a Linux port would be.
