Applying a normal map to 2d sprites

I really love this feature in torque X and was able to produce some amazing effects with the normal maps. Is it possible? If so what is the likelihood of it happening? If I owned the pro versions of both would a programmer be able to manipulate the code of torque X so that TGB could use it?

TorqueX and TGB are in different languages. My guess is that only the logic could be used.

Still, if it was possible, it'd be an amazing thing to add.

It would most likely be easier to create a new material system for TGB textures than it would be to try to convert over TX's code.
