I've come to miss this feature a lot since the new site was rolled out. There's a lot less community-feel around here than 4 months ago, or I'm just not seeing it.
Is there a chance this feature will make a return?

How about on the empty side space/margin on each page? It takes up a good half the width of each page. One side for 3D images/videos, other side for 2D image work??

it might also be nice to allow instant approval, similar to what's been done with resources. limit a given user to one IOTD per week or something, but otherwise let 'em all in. true you may end up with some crappy or inappropriate images (eg spam) but you might also end up with way more IOTDs.

That would complicate things as the amount of margin space is dictated by your resolution. For instance, I'm on my MSI Wind with a max res of 1024 by 600. I have about a half inch margin on either side.
Personally, I like Orion suggestion and second it.

Ye. The little bugger which used to reside on your top-right side of the screen. The latest one was shown as a large picture, while the last 4 or so were shown below the large one at a much reduced size but with the number of comments visible.
