Compatibility with Windows 7

by XanthorXIII · in Torque Game Builder · 08/19/2009 (8:38 am) · 17 replies

While I do understand Windows 7 is quite new, are we going to see compatibility when T2D comes out? Working in Vista or even 7 with TGB 1.7.4 is kinda a big pain right now.
Just wondering.

Both Melv and myself run Windows 7 to develop Torque 2D in, so I'd say yes!

So far it seems like the transition of our engines to Windows 7 has gone a lot easier than the transition from XP to Vista. Hoping this trend continues :)

The terror of Vista will end on Oct 22. When I think about it, I'm pretty sure that when that thing hits you will see a mass exodus from Vista to 7. It would be funny if Microsoft ended support for Vista before XP.

The truth is, Windows 7 is generally more stable than Windows Vista could ever hope to be.

You know, I honestly think Windows Vista was a horrible, horrible ploy that was forced on us whenever we bought a new PC, that would inevitably cause us to leap for Windows 7 when it came out.

Tricky little Microsoft Geniuses. D:<

I've been using Windows 7 with TGB since Windows 7 beta and haven't had a problem yet. Give windows 7 a try, the GUI is way better than previous Windows.

Blackcode, I've been running T3D in Win7 for the past few months without a hickup. Define "slow".

I wish I've could show ya...
looks like i have like 3-4 fps...
i've tried different demos (FPS, PhysX) same result

My System Specifications:

Operating system: Windows 2.6.1.7600 (Windows 7 Professional)
CPU type: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz
CPU Speed (GHz): 2.021 System memory (GB): 2.999
Graphics card model: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1350
Graphics card driver: atiumdag.dll
Desktop resolution: 1440x900
Hard disk size (GB): 232.786
Hard disk free space (GB): 197.722

Update: My whole system is slowed not just only the T3D app.

Without the FPS Demo app launched
Torque 3D.exe CPU: 00 Memory: 7360K

With the FPS Demo app launched
Torque 3D.exe CPU: 02 Memory: 130720K

Tried different video configs also.

1400/900 - 800/600

ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1350 (D3D9) - GFX NULL DEVICE

ADVANCE LIGHTNING ALL SELECTED - ALL DESELECTED

Nothing works. It looks like a memory leak of somekind.

Running the in a web browser looks to be OK.

you need to go with basic lighting on that low end card.
You can't use AL on it.

The slowdown is to be expected as the whole desktop rendering "dies down" as AL is using 220% of your gpu ...

Are u kidding me...
I know it's not a highend video card but i can play most of games with it. I really do not think T3D is such a very high engine to require all that power.
I was in FPS demo (no object no nothing... just the player)

Update: You were right about that. Using basic lightning instaead of advanced does change the things. But why the hell T3D is such a GPU eating engine?

The X1300 series are very slow with T3D, as they are low-end cards. This card came out in 2006. Also, it is a laptop chipset which means even less horsepower. Expecting decent performance in advanced lighting with such a low end card is just not reasonable. That's why we have basic lighting as well. Just being honest.

I know it's a old notebook card. What i wanted to point is what does have t3d more than the engine used by blizzard in WOW since i ca run it full options. Same about Counter strike source, unity 3d.

Those are games, Torque 3D is an engine. The performance of the demos that ship with T3D are not comparable to the performance of a game that has been fully optimized for performance.

I have full faith that any game developer with competent artists can make any game type they wish with Torque 3D and have it look amazing and run at an acceptable frame rate on modern computers. The demos are meant to show off tons of features and are not tuned to the extent that finished titles are.

I have Windows 7 (64 bit) on my desktop PC and my MacBook Pro and it's been rock-solid.
I ran TGB and a game from it and no issues.

Joseph might have been a little confused by the fact this is in the TGB forum ;)
